The Long War mod for XCOM: Enemy Unknown is now available to download for free at the game's Steam Workshop page. The Long War mod was originally created by grad student John Lumpkin (also known as Wghost81) during his studies, but it garnered so much attention that he decided to convert it into a full-fledged commercial project. Set fifteen years after the events of Enemy Unknown, Long War tasks players with fighting off an alien invasion on Earth following the destruction of XCOM HQ in America. The aliens are armed with improved technology and have launched a coordinated world attack looking to seize global power. The game's objectives are similar to its vanilla counterpart, but there are some notable differences. For starters, the mod includes ten soldier classes (eight of which are based on the Enemy Unknown/Within cast) that can be unlocked as players progress through missions. It also introduces new maps based on real-world cities and nations based on their geo-political relevance; for instance, China is the setting for at least one map. As for their strategic side, Long War introduces new mechanics like soldiers who can evacuate civilians during terror missions. In addition to the main single-player campaign, Long War also features a multi-player mode where players can join a random team and work together to defeat a commander. The game's developers have also built a "mod manager" that allows players to update their mod without having to uninstall it from Steam. In April 2014, Lumpkin launched an Indiegogo project that raised nearly $26,000 from 486 backers. In May 2015, Lumpkin announced that the original goal of the Indiegogo campaign had been reached and he would take on freelance work for Steam Workshop projects going forward. Long War is also featured in the Firaxis Games game "Comet" (formerly "XCOM: Enemy Unknown Plus") which is loosely based on the Long War mod. The Long War mod is currently available for download on Steam, but it can also be found in the game's Workshop. Players can access all of the game's features without purchasing the game.
